Prolonging the life of a Starrett Bi-metal Hole Saw

A bi-metal hole saw is a versatile tool that is commonly used in construction, plumbing, and HVAC work. These saws are designed to cut through a variety of materials, including metal, wood, and plastic. However, like any tool, they will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. In this article, we will discuss some tips on how to prolong the life of your bi-metal hole saw.

Keep the saw clean and lubricated

Bi-metal hole saws can be prone to rust and corrosion, so it’s important to keep them clean and lubricated. Use a light oil or a rust inhibitor to keep the saw in good condition.

Use the correct speed

Bi-metal hole saws are designed to be used at a specific speed, so make sure to use the correct speed when cutting. Starrett PowerCalc can assist with choosing the recommended RPM. Using the saw at a speed that is too fast can cause it to overheat and rub the material instead of cutting and wearing out faster.

Use the correct cutting technique

When using a bi-metal hole saw, it’s important to use the correct cutting technique. Choose the recommended RPM for the diameter of the saw and the material you are cutting, use coolant/lubrication, and ensure you are using enough force to create chips/swarf because if the saw is rubbing, it will generate heat and burn the tips off the saw rendering it unable to cut.

Use the correct type of saw

Bi-metal hole saws come in 3 different types, FCH, DCH, and CSC, so make sure to use the correct type of saw for the job. Using the wrong type can cause premature wear and/or damage.

Store the saw properly

When not in use, make sure to store your bimetal hole saw in a dry, cool place. This will help prevent rust and corrosion and prolong the life of the saw.

Extra Cobalt

Another important factor in prolonging the life of a bimetal hole saw is the presence of extra cobalt in the saw. Cobalt is a chemical element with high heat resistance, that is added to the makeup of the HSS cutting edge, making it more durable and resistant to wear and tear. The cobalt helps to improve the saw’s resistance to heat. When cutting through materials, the saw can generate a lot of heat, which can cause premature tooth wear. The cobalt helps to dissipate this heat and prevent the saw from getting damaged.
