In the latest “Meet the Team” blog, we caught up with Yorkshireman Alan Boldan, UK Area Sales Manager for Starrett UK.
Alan, for those who don’t know you, tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a proud Yorkshireman, now living in Rotherham, a large town in South Yorkshire. I’ve been married for 29 years to my Scottish wife, Margaret, who works in a local school. Together we have a 20-year-old daughter, Ally, who is a Graphic Designer for a marketing company in Sheffield.
I’m a very keen follower of Rugby and a season ticket holder at my local club Rotherham Titans. I enjoy spending time at the gym and try to see as much England Rugby as possible, which offers some interesting discussions with my Scottish colleagues, but all in good humour.
Can you tell us about your job and what your role involves?
As one of the six Starrett UK Area Sales Managers, I cover an area which includes Leeds and Wakefield in West Yorkshire, North and South Humberside, South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Norfolk.
Since I started working at Starrett two and a half years ago, I look after a number of key regional accounts, helping them, and in turn helping us develop business in the user marketplace. My goals include looking for and developing new business across the area, in new markets and within the product range.
I also deal with end user technical solution provisions, while representing Starrett in a professional manner. I have been in the sales game for 30 years now, so you could say I come with a little experience!
What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?
For me the role is all about relationships. Some customers I have today with Starrett, I have dealt with in various other sales roles over the past 30 years. It means a lot to me, that over the years they have built up a trust in me and the job I can do for them.
I also love to be able to solve and give cost effective technical solutions to customers.
What is the most difficult part of your role?
Always a challenging part of any sales role is the competition and keeping one step ahead. However, with Starrett I feel we are moving forward with lots of new ideas and new products that will keep us at the forefront of professionalism and technology.
Can you tell us a bit about your customer base?
I have a strong key regional customer base with some great prospects for growth. To some extent they cross different user markets, so in the future, this is an area I want to tap into and develop.
Which Starrett product is most popular in your area and why do you think that’s the case?
By far Starrett’s Hole Saws – they have been without a doubt our leading product for years. Though whilst maintaining that and growing the different ranges, we have a number of other products we can take to market and we are starting to grow with those.
What has been the highlight of your career to date?
I’ll leave that for others to judge.
What’s your favourite Starrett product and why?
I honestly love them all! If we haven’t got faith in them how can we expect our customers to?
What do you love about the Starrett brand and why do you think our products are the best on the market?
The brand is and has been for years been synonymous with quality and performance. Quite rightly Starrett has served the industry well for many, many years.
