Early this November, we were delighted to welcome senior students from local high school, Jedburgh Grammar Campus to Starrett to create their very own film, titled ‘A Day in the Life of Starrett’, in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), Borders.
As one of 21 regional groups across Scotland set up to bridge the gap between education and the world of work, Developing the Young Workforce Borders is an industry-led group, that aims to strengthen links between business and education, to engage, inspire and shape the young workforce in the Borders. Thus, helping young people be more work-ready and aware of the opportunities and pathways available to them – an initiative Starrett firmly supports.
Working with Jodie Martin, Starrett’s HR Manager, and the DYW Borders coordinator, an idea was conceived for students with an interest in marketing and media to visit Starrett and learn more about the company and digital media through hands-on kinaesthetic learning – filming their visit.
Once advertisements went out in the local school, it wasn’t long before interest was received from four eager students, so a date was set for their visit.
Arriving at Starrett at 9am for a full day of interactive learning, the students and DYW coordinator were met by Chay Caldwell, Digital Marketing Specialist, and Stacey Ballantyne, UK Marketing Coordinator of the Starrett Marketing team. After the necessary covid and health & safety procedures were completed, it was time to get started.
Students were provided with an overview of Starrett and what our work involves, as well as an introduction to marketing, before being briefed on the day’s task of finding out what a day in the life of Starrett involves.
Diving straight in, the students were given all the necessary filming equipment and taught how to use it, before the marketing team led the students around the site, introducing them to each department, from IT to Finance, Export to Dispatch, and Customer Services to Sales. Along the way, students were briefed on the procedures of each department and could ask questions to learn more – which they came well prepared for – and collected quotes from team members to add to their film.
On the day of the student’s visit, David Allen, Vice President of Starrett Metrology Systems was also visiting Starrett, so an impromptu Q&A session was arranged with David and the students to learn more about how the company operates internationally.
The chat really made the student’s day and some even compared the feeling as similar to “meeting Jeff Bezos” – American entrepreneur and founder of Amazon.
After the filming was complete, it was back to the office to learn about the editing process. Working with the students, they helped edit the footage, select the clips for the film, chose a backing track, and added in the most appropriate quotes. The students really got to see through the whole filmmaking process from the idea’s conception to the finished piece.
You can watch the 60-second video ‘A Day in the Life of Starrett’ below, or on our social media channels. We hope you enjoy watching the film and we would like to take this opportunity to wish the students every success as they venture forward with their learning and onwards to the working world.
